Glomerulonephritis (GN) denotes glomerular injury and applies to a group of diseases that are generally, but not always, characterised by inflammatory changes in the glomerular capillaries and the glomerular basement membrane (GBM).
Types of glomerulonephritis:
Minimal change disease
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
Membranous glomerulonephritis
IgA nephropathy
Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis
Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis
Goodpasture’s syndrome
Risk factors
- Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus
- Resp/GI infections - assoc. with IgA nephropathy - may cause recurrent haematuria, 1-3 days post infection
- Hep B/C
- Cancers - lymphoma, lung Ca, colorectal Ca, leukemia. thymoma
PC
- Haematuria - variable frequency depending on type of GN
- Oedema
