- Non-toxic waste product of protein metabolism
- Urine-concentrating mechanism
Causes of high urea:
- AKI
- Dehydration
- GI bleed - hypovolaemia, digested RBC can release more urea
- high protein diet
- CCF
Causes of low urea:
- Poor oral intake
- Liver disease
- Haemodilution
