NICE definition:

• at least 3 unformed stools in 24 hours
• at least 1 additional Sx: abdo pain, cramps, nausea, vomitting, blood in stool
• within 10 days of travel abroad

Causes

• Bacteria:
  • 80-90% caused by bacteria e.g. E.Coli (profuse watery diarrhoea), comylobacter, salmonella, shigella
• Noravirus and rotavirus are the most common viral causes
• Parasites account for 1-2% of cases - e.g. Giardia

Investigations

*Not usually necessary

If blood in stools, severe illness or prolonged Sx (>14 days)

• Labs - FBC, U&E, CRP, ESR
• stool culture
• C. Diff tests - if Abx within 6 weeks or recent hospital admissions

Management

• Rehydration
• Oral rehydration salts
