NICE definition:
- at least 3 unformed stools in 24 hours
- at least 1 additional Sx: abdo pain, cramps, nausea, vomitting, blood in stool
- within 10 days of travel abroad
Causes
- Bacteria:
- 80-90% caused by bacteria e.g. E.Coli (profuse watery diarrhoea), comylobacter, salmonella, shigella
- Noravirus and rotavirus are the most common viral causes
- Parasites account for 1-2% of cases - e.g. Giardia
Investigations
*Not usually necessary
If blood in stools, severe illness or prolonged Sx (>14 days)
- Labs - FBC, U&E, CRP, ESR
- stool culture
- C. Diff tests - if Abx within 6 weeks or recent hospital admissions
Management
- Rehydration
- Oral rehydration salts
