Speach, language and hearing milestones

6 weeks - Startled by sudden noises

3-6 months - babbling

9 months - understands No, bye bye, own name

12 months - understand a few words with meanings

18 months - 6-10 words

2 years - Follows 2 step commands, put 2 words together

3 years - 3-4 word sentences, start to tell stories and ask questions

4 years - count to 10, identify colours

Causes of delay:

• Hearing
  • Congenital - Genetic, prematurity, hypoxia, infections (CMV, rubella)
  • Acquired - Infective (meningitis), obstructive, trauma
• Speach
  • Oral-motor
  • neurodevelopmental

Red flags:

• No words by 18 = refer to paediatrician
