Erythema infectiosum (Slapped cheek syndrome/5th disease)
Virus can affect unborn baby in first 20 weeks of pregnancy
If a women is exposed in early pregnancy - maternal igG and igM need ot be checked
PC
- Parvovirus B19 presents in children with a prodrome of fever, coryza and diarrhoea.
- May consist of a noticeable rose-red rash which appears after a few days
- may spread to rest of the body, rarely involves palms and soles
- Parvovirus can produce this lace-like rash in the trunk and arms, more in women and adults.
- Usually peaks at a week then fades
- can reoccur following the infection to certain triggers (sun, heat)
In adults, the virus may cause acute arthritis.
*Once the rash appears, the child is no longer infectious
Investigations
- Can confirm diagnosis with parvovirus serology
Management
No Tx requried. supportive care
