Napkin rashes are a very common problem of early infancy. The main causes are:

• napkin dermatitis
• candidiasis
• infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis

Management

• For a simple ammoniacal nappy rash, initially advise the parents to regularly change and wash the groin area and expose the area to air as much as possible, avoiding over moisturising
• For a stubborn nappy rash - hydrocortisone can be used
• If candida add topical nystatin or topical imidazole
