A migraine is a primary headache disorder characterised by a moderate or severe headache with associated symptoms such as photophopbia, phonophobia, nausea and vomitting

Epidemiology:

• global prevaalence of around 1 in 7 people
• 3x more common in women than men

There are several types of migraine:

• Migraine without aura
• Migraine with aura
• Silent migraine (migraine with aura but without a headache)
• Hemiplegic migraine

Triggers

Migraines can be have specific triggers that are individual to the person. Often it is not possible to identify triggers. Potentially triggers are:

• Stress, tiredness
• alcohol
• COCP
• Dehydration or lack of food
• Certain foods (e.g. chocolate, cheese and caffeine)
• Bright lights
• Menstruation
