A term used to describe MSK lower back pain
Arising from anatomical structures
Most common cause of lower back pain, must rule out other differentials (<5% of lumbar back pain have a serious cause)
Risk factors
- Poor working conditions (long periods of sitting are NOT significant)
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Low socioeconomic status
Pathology
- Damage to muscles, soft tissues of lower back - result of posture, physical activity, lifting etc.
- Most commonly due to disorders of facet joints - then cause damage to surrounding tissue
- Cycle of muscle spasm>pain>spasm>pain
PC
- Lower back pain
- Pain worse on movement (bending, twisting)
- Relived by rest, at night
- May or may not be a history of a specific history
