Complete dislocation of 2 articulating bone surfaces, often caused by sudden impact to the joint (partial = subluxation)
Common sites - Shoulder, finger, patella, elbow, hip
Risk factors:
- Sports related activities
- Motor vehicle accident - post. hip dislocation
- Ligamentous laxity
- Ehlers-danlos syndrome
- Young males - Shoulder and finger injuries most common
- Women aged 61-80 - Shoulder dislocations incidence is high
- Prior Hx of joint instability

- Pain and tender
- Inability to move joint/limited ROM
- swelling
