Airway

First line when establishing an airway - ETT, may be difficult if:

• airway edema
• facial or neck trauma
• significant bleeding into the airway

If endotracheal intubation fails, the preferred method of establishing an emergency airway is cricothyroidotomy, in which an incision is made in the cricothyroid membrane.
