Also called cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma
A dermatofibroma is a common benign fibrous nodule usually found on the skin of the lower legs
Aetiology:
- Unclear aetiology - unclear if a reactive process or true neoplasm
- lesions composed of proliferating fibroblasts, macrophages may also be involved
PC
- A solitary firm papule or nodule on a limb
- thethered to the skin surface and mobile
- The overlying skin dimples on pinching the lesion - dimple or pinch sign
- Colour:
- pink to light brown on white skin
- dark brown to black in dark skin
- Sometimes are painful, tender, itchy
Investigations
*Usually a clinical diagnosis
- Diagnostic excision or skin biopsy is undertaken if any atypical features - enlargement, ulceration, colours
Management
No treatment needed - patient reassurance
