Also called cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma

A dermatofibroma is a common benign fibrous nodule usually found on the skin of the lower legs

Aetiology:

• Unclear aetiology - unclear if a reactive process or true neoplasm
• lesions composed of proliferating fibroblasts, macrophages may also be involved

PC

• A solitary firm papule or nodule on a limb
• thethered to the skin surface and mobile
• The overlying skin dimples on pinching the lesion - dimple or pinch sign
• Colour:
  • pink to light brown on white skin
  • dark brown to black in dark skin
• Sometimes are painful, tender, itchy

Investigations

*Usually a clinical diagnosis

• Diagnostic excision or skin biopsy is undertaken if any atypical features - enlargement, ulceration, colours

Management

No treatment needed - patient reassurance
