Swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheaths in the wrist. Primarily affects 2 tendons (1st extensor compartment):

• APL
• EPB

It is a type of repetitive strain injury (overuse) and results in pain on the radial side of the wrist. (Mummy’s thumb)

PC

Patients present with Sx at the radial aspect of the wrist near the base of the thumb. Typical Sx include:

• Pain, often radiating to forearm
• Aching
• Burning
• Weakness
• Numbness
• Tenderness

On examination:

• Positive Finkelstein’s test - Patient makes fist with thumb inside fingers, ulnar deviates wrist. Pain = Positive test

Management

• Rest and adapt activities, using spints to restrict movements
• Analgesia - NSAIDs
• Steroid injections
