Benign, individual fluid filled lumps. Occur between ages 30-50 (more so in perimenopausal period). Can fluctuate over menstrual cycle (hormonal link)

7% of all Western females will present with a breast cyst • Small increased risk of breast cancer (especially if younger)

PC

• Can be painful

On examination:

• Smooth
• Well-circumscribed
• Mobile
• Possibly fluctuant

Investigations

• Mammogram and USS done to confirm diagnosis

Management

• Cysts should be aspirated (and discard the aspirate), those which are blood stained or persistently refill should be biopsied or excised
• No follow up required
